GSLV-MkIII D2

The second developmental flight of GSLV-MkIII D2 was an important milestone for Indian Space Research Organisation. The GSLV-MkIII, the most sophisticated rocket with Isro, will be the vehicle used in both the proposed mission of carrying a human into space and the Chandrayaan-II mission scheduled for January. Therefore, yesterday’s launch to place the GSAT-29 satellite in orbit augurs well for the future. The GSAT-29 is the heaviest satellite launched thus far by Isro and will play a crucial role in improving communication connectivity in physically challenging terrain in India.

This launch also marks an important development in the commercial possibilities India’s space programme holds. When seen in conjunction with last year’s launch of 104 satellites at one go, it enhances the prospects of Isro’s commercial arm, Antrix Corp. The global space industry is worth over $300 billion and Isro has emerged as a competitive player. Commercialising its capabilities helps pay for its activities and generates resources for more research. Isro represents a policy success story which spanned multiple governments as it required patient investment to leverage long-term strategic and commercial gains.  Isro’s successes are also bound to catalyse opportunities for India’s private sector in a number of areas.
