Decide on safety sealing in six months: HC to Centre

The Bombay High Court has given the Union government six months’ time to take a decision on making safety sealing mandatory for healthcare and hygiene products.
  • The court passed the directive while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL). The PIL is about pilferage of cosmetics, child care, healthcare and hygiene products.

Lok Sabha passes Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016

The Lok Sabha has passed the Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016 to amend the Income Tax Act, 1961 and Finance Act, 2016 on 29 November 2016. The Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on 28 November 2016.
  • It imposes a higher rate of tax and penalty in respect of undisclosed incomes.
  • The Bill proposes to introduce the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan (PMGK) Yojana, 2016.

Civil society groups are opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, terming it “communally motivated humanitarianism.”

Proposals pending for inclusion in the VIII Schedule

There are 38 proposals pending for inclusion in the VIII Schedule of the Constitution with the government. The government had instituted an official group to look into the inclusion of these languages in the VIII Schedule. The committee has given its report and the government is examining it.
